MILDRED G. SMITH Obituary & Memorial Service
Mildred G. Smith, 89, of Richmond, MO, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Shirkey’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond with her family at her side. Mildred was born December 22, 1922 in Holdridge, NE. She married Thomas Q. Purcell on November 11, 1944; he preceded her in death in 1967. She later married Richard L. Estes on October 23, 1970; he preceded her in death in 1973. On September 28, 1978 she married Rev. William R. Smith who preceded her in death in 1998. Mildred is survived by her six children: Thomas Q. Purcell and wife, Carla, of Frankfort, IL; Dr. James D. Parker and wife, Rose, of Lainsburg, MI; Frank A. Purcell of Richmond, MO; Barbara S. Konzak and husband, Phil, of Liberty, MO; William G. Purcell and wife, Paula, of Richmond, MO; and Cora L. Borja and husband, Robert, of Milpitas, CA. Other survivors include sixteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren. In addition to parents, Walter J. Parker and Mary R. Tunison, Mildred was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Parker and James Parker; one sister, Mary Jean Eddie; and one grandson, George Christopher Purcell. Mildred worked in the war effort during WWII in an aircraft factory. She was a loving homemaker dedicated to training up her children and grandchildren in the saving grace of Christ’s love. She spent many hours praying over each child and grandchild, praying over their salvation and commitment to Christ. Mildred was beloved by the community, investing in the lives of others through involvement as a Foster Grandparent, caring for a number of elderly women at the end of their lives, and volunteering at Ray County Senior Center. Mildred is known to many as “Mrs. Clause”, as she and her husband Rev. Bill Smith, aka “Santa”, listened to many children’s Christmas wishes over the years. She was a member of Christian Union Church and Christian Fellowship Ministry. Mildred’s life was a testament to her love of God and family. Throughout her life, she touched many people with her generosity and selfless acts of kindness. Mildred will be missed dearly, but we know she is healed, made whole and rejoicing with our Savior now. We will see you in the morning, Mom.

PRAYER REQUEST
Terry Smelcer -11:30pm, May 16, 2012
Not sure where to start but LaJuana and I need your prayers. She has been in extreme pain for about 10 days and we returned to KU Med yesterday to see her Dr. Burton and as usual they took x-rays and when he came in he said, “What has happened to you since you left the hospital?” And of course our answer was “nothing except her pain and unable to stand up straight.” When we looked at the x-rays he found LaJuana has a compression fracture of the L4 vertebra which was not there in the x-rays they took when she left the hospital. He said the only way to correct it is to have surgery again.
So here is our prayer request after a long explanation; she will be into KU Med this Friday and have surgery first thing Saturday morning. The surgery will last approximately 6-7 hrs and they will extend the rods to her pelvic area and then in 6-8 weeks will have to go back in from a different angle to put in the final support through bone grafts. This is the surgery we had hoped to avoid from the beginning as he had said this would be the toughest surgery she has been through. Please pray for strength, courage and that God’s will would be done and through it all that He will be glorified. As usual she took the news like she always does, cried for about a minute and then said “Let’s do it ‘cause God is in control.”
Terry Smelcer -May 18, 2012
Please continue to pray for LaJuana, yesterday as she was walking down the hallway her legs gave way and she fell to her knees. With the aid of our neighbor and our daughter and granddaughter they were able to get her up and carried her to the couch. She is suppose to go into the hospital today but cannot walk. She is unable to put any weight on her legs at all. Please pray this is only temporary and can be corrected when she has surgery. Our daughter and granddaughters stayed with her last night as it takes 3 people to move her. Praise God that Shannon and Ashley both are or have beenCNA’s and know how to handle her. We appreciate your prayers and our church family.
