We extend our sympathy to Pastor Lee and Beth and the Lute family in the death of Ray Lute. He passed away on March 10. He was Beth’s grandfather. We dismissed our Wednesday evening Bible Study on March 14 for the visitation.

Pastor Lee and Beth hosted a party for little Brady’s first birthday on Saturday afternoon, March 17. The whole congregation was invited along with members of his family. Everyone enjoyed the food, fun and fellowship. Little Brady received many nice gifts and enjoyed eating his birthday cake. He turned one year old on March 25.

During the Sunday morning worship service on March 18, little Justin Thomas sang “I’ll Fly Away.” He did a great job, and we all enjoyed it.

Some improvements have been made in and around our church buildings this month. Pastor Lee and the trustees (Russell Gaffin, Bob Hull and Jeff Kimberly) installed a new tile floor covering in the kitchen and bathrooms in the Fellowship Hall. The Bob Nixon family purchased a beautiful new picture for the church in his memory. It has been hung in the sanctuary. We also have a new concrete border around the front of the church, and the old shrubs have been removed. We want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make all this possible.

We will be celebrating Easter on April 8. The children will be presenting a program during the morning worship, and we will be taking communion during the evening worship.

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.” Job 19:25-27

Hills Chapel Christian Union             Pastor Jonathan King

Why Would Kicks, Paint, and Jesus Be in the Same Sentence?

The youth of Hills Chapel volunteered a day to help clean and paint the building that is the home for Kicks for Jesus in West Union, Ohio. Kicks for Jesus is a ministry owned and operated by David and Monica Grover. They currently have over 100 students attending. The ministry teaches individuals five years old and older about the love of Jesus while giving them instruction in Tae Kwon Do.

Kicks for Jesus is operated entirely from donations. They reach many people who could not afford to take lessons in martial arts not only with instruction that builds character but also the hope of eternal life. While sharing with our church recently, Jonathan said, “When I think of missionaries, I often think of people meeting needs in another country. However, I now see David and Monica Grover as missionaries in another county. Both their mission, their dedication, and their costs are the same as those we support on various mission fields.”

There are currently five members of Hills Chapel, including our pastor, attending their classes. Many others are starting to show an interest. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning martial arts or your or your church is interested in helping support this ministry, check out their website at www.kicksforjesus.com.

Birthday Dinner

On March 30 our church celebrated everyone’s birthday for the first quarter of 2012 with a carry-in dinner. We had lots of good food and lots of great people. It is truly a blessing to be able to share our lives with both our family and church family.

It is difficult to imagine living without the love and support of those around us. This is a blessing that many of us casually take for granted. This week I encourage you to make it a point to let the people you love know that you love them and pick at least one person that you believe is lonely and let them know you care.

Otway Christian Union Church             Pastor Brad Harris

Greetings and Happy Easter!

February 29 the entire congregation was sick with stomach viruses, and our pastor was having gall bladder surgery, so the church service had to be canceled.

March 2 a tornado hit thevillageofOtwayand destroyed some buildings and damaged the church roof.

The church was saddened on March 9. Our former pastor, Ray Lute, passed away. He was a faithful pastor to the church for nearly 20 years and was loved by the entire church. We were saddened also by the death of Alva Knechtly. We extend our sympathy and our prayers are with Thelma.

Donna Day has been back in the hospital and has had more surgery. Please remember her in prayer.

Mary Freeman and Jim Smith have been having tests and may be facing surgery in the future. So keep them on your prayer list.

Pastor Brad had Joe Cunningham come and explain ways to increase church growth on March 24.

March 25 our Sunday school superintendant, Keith Dettwiller, gave awards for three months’ perfect attendance.

March 27 our Sewing Circle met with an encouraging lesson given by Gina Harris. We were blessed by the lesson, fellowship and refreshments.

The church was blessed as they remembered the Lord’s death by taking communion on Palm Sunday.

May you be strengthened in your faith as you celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Beyond the Cross

The drops of sweat are flowing, His suffering so great, He pleads His case to Heaven, although he knows His fate. Retreating to a garden, He knows this is the end, the crowing rooster echoes betrayal by his friend. Though death will never stop Him, men callously will try; with nails and whips and beatings, they crown and watch Him die. No grave will ever hold Him, for God has bigger plans; beyond the cross in Heaven, Christ sits at God’s right hand.

Marjorie Swearingen reported on the Adams County Youth Rally Quiz which was held on the afternoon of February 12. There were 16 in attendance. Our Junior Team placed third in the Junior Quiz and our Senior Team placed second in the Senior Sword Drills. The next quiz will be on Sunday afternoon, March 11. They study hard and appreciate all who support them.

The two oldest ladies in our congregation celebrated birthdays this month. Marjorie Rhoads had a birthday on February 14 and she celebrated inFloridawhile visiting with her son. Bessie Jean Crawford had a birthday on February 20. We love them both and hope that they celebrate many more.

We extend our sympathy to Doris Gilkison and her family in the death of her husband, Bob, who passed away on February 18. He was a loving husband and father and a good friend to many and will be greatly missed.

There were three people who went to the altar this month. Pray that they will continue to come to church and worship and be willing to serve the Lord.

This winter has been mild so far, but we are still looking forward to spring. We wish you a Happy Easter on April 8.

In Him We Live (Helen Steiner Rice)

A troubled world can find, Blessed reassurance and enduring peace of mind,

For though we grow discouraged in this world we’re living in,

There is comfort just in knowing God has triumphed over sin.

For our Savior’s resurrection was God’s way of telling men,

That in Christ we are eternal and in Him we live again.

Pastor Jonathan King

Will You Marry Me?

The service on Sunday, February 12, had a surprise for most of our congregation, but a huge one for Melissa Robinson. Melissa and Josh Charlton were asked to come to the front of the church presumably for one of Jonathan’s life examples. However, after being asked to close their eyes, Melissa opened hers to find Josh on his knee asking her if she would be his wife. She said yes!

It was great to share such an important occasion with these two young people, we know and love as family. We are proud of both of them and the decisions they are making. We are asking that you pray for them as they begin to prepare for their life together.

Dinner and a Movie

On February 10 Hills Chapel had a Valentine Candlelight dinner and a movie. The teens of the church showed their appreciation for the adults by hosting a sit down candlelight dinner for each adult couple in the church. The menu involved tossed salad, lasagna, garlic, and homemade bread, as well as a variety of homemade desserts. The food was wonderful.

Each couple also had a portrait taken. The portraits were processed and framed, then given to the couples the following Sunday. There were several comments that those were the first pictures that many had taken together for years.

The couples then got to share a quiet evening watching Courageous, while childcare was provided. It was a great evening with an awesome movie.

Thank you Jonathan and Amanda, as well as the youth involved for putting together such an enjoyable and meaningful evening. We know it was a lot of work, but it was enjoyed and your efforts were greatly appreciated by all those who attended.

Youth Rally

On February 6 was the Otway Youth Rally. Our seniors placed third in sword drills and Hills Chapel received the attendance banner. Congratulations to our teams and those who coach them.

Women’s Conference

Four women from our church attended the women’s conference held at Shiloh Christian Union in Delta,Ohio. The conference was called “Women Connecting Heart to Heart.” The conference involved three primary speakers and several others sharing in worship and skits.

The ladies who attended testified to the conference’s success and shared the encouragement it provided to them and their walk of faith with our church. Hills Chapel would like to thankShilohand those who worked hard to put this conference together for their efforts.

A Light in the Dark

Hills Chapel’s white glove team had a busy month. On February 5 the team shared their message at Tick Ridge Free Will Baptist Church inMinford,Ohio. Dylan Amburgey, a member of the team, brought the message for that service.

On February 12 the team shared once again atFaithFellowshipChurchinMcDermott,Ohio. This service also involved other members of our youth worshipping in song and testimony.

If you are interested in having them at your church, you can contact Sabrina Amburgey at samburgey@northwest.k12.oh.us for more information.

Remember this. Enjoy yourself. These are the “good old days” you are going to miss in 20 years.

We are gathering items to be given to the families in the community that were affected by the tornado, some even losing everything they had. After our meeting we had a Ladies Tea. There were different flavors of tea, small sandwiches, and several kinds of cookies. Next month, we will have a carry-in meal after our meeting, and the men are invited to the meal. We have a bake sale scheduled at Prather’s IGA on Friday, April 6.

My Constant Friend

No other friend is like my Lord, faithful, just and true

Greetings and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

An Irish blessing to cheer you… “Faith to uphold you, love to enfold you, laughter to light up each day, Smiles on your faces, goodness and graces, for all of these blessings we pray.”

Pastor Brad finished teaching in II Corinthians and is now teaching in the book of Esther on Wednesday.

On February 19, following the evening service, we had a time of fellowship for the kids (they were out of school the next day) and adults. We were blessed by the fellowship.

On February 21, the Sewing Circle met with a wonderful lesson given by Billie Jo Smith on “How Great Is God.” The men came and ate with us then they had a Bible lesson from Matthew. The refreshments were served by Gina Harris and Jennifer Havens, which was very good.

February has not been a cold, snowy or bad month, but we have had major illnesses in the church making the month very stressful. Donna Day had a two week stay in the hospital. Jim Smith was hospitalized for a week with blood clots and other major illnesses. Emily Havens has been suffering from severe ear infections. Others were sick with winter illnesses and some having therapy, and our pastor is having gall bladder surgery on the 29th of February. Please remember the church in your prayers.

“I Said a Prayer for You Today”

And I know God must have heard. I felt the answer in my heart although He spoke no word. I didn’t ask for wealth or fame. I knew you wouldn’t mind. I asked Him to send treasures of a far more lasting kind! I asked that He’d be near to you at the start of each new day, to grant you health and blessings and friends to share your way! I asked for happiness for you in all things great and small. But it was for His loving care I prayed for most of all!

Keep praying and looking up for He is soon coming! Because ofCalvary,

Hills Chapel Christian Union

Otway Youth Rally

Hills Chapel is a part of the Otway Youth Rally. On January 9, we enjoyed fellowship with members from the other churches at the rally. After sword drills, we listened to ventriloquist and puppeteer Scott Brafford as he shared the message of Christ. We all had our fill of pizza before cleaning up and heading home. It is truly a blessing to get to share with brothers and sisters who attend other churches.

Our Condolences

The church family at Hills Chapel would like to send our love and support to Bertha Newman and her family. Bert’s daughter Lorena (Cookie) Newman Jones passed away onJanuary 12, 2012, in Tomball, Texas, at the age of 67. She was a great woman of God. She loved Him, her family, and her church very much. There is joy in heaven today, and it is a much brighter place because she is there.

There was a memorial service at the church onJanuary 22, 2012, to celebrate and remember Cookie’s life. We would also like to thank everyone who brought and served food and supported the family after the service.

Successful Fundraiser

Monday, January 23, there was a fundraiser for Paula Brewer at Gatti’s Pizza in Portsmouth, Ohio. Our church would like to thank everyone who came out and supported Paula as she fights her battle with cancer. Gatti’s stated the event was one of the best fundraisers they had ever had.

We would also request that all of the area churches keep Paula in your prayers as she finishes chemotherapy and begins her radiation treatments.

Happy Birthday

We wish a happy belated birthday to our very own Litter Patrol Barbie, Makayla Powell. She turned 17 on January 14. We would also like to wish a belated birthday to Audrey Mullett. She turned 19 on January 15. We are proud of both of these young ladies and are very thankful they are a part of our church family.

What Happens to Newborn Christians?

The news is full of parents who leave, abuse, or neglect their young children. Just this week, I watched a news clip about a mother who mysteriously walked away from a 2 and 4 year old leaving them in a van in Colorado for over two hours. People were outraged, the police were involved, and investigations were being made.

As I thought about this event, I started wondering about new believers. Many times we focus our attention on getting people to come to church. We thank God when they go to the altar, but what happens? More often than not they are spiritually abandoned. They come back to church and are given meat. If they don’t understand or can’t digest this, they are judged.

As Christians, I think we need to be more aware of newborn believers. We need to care and nurture them the same way we would our own children. I believe this is a big part of making disciples, which was part of the commission we were given in Matthew chapter 28.

Local newspapers may not mention our failure to do so. Local TV stations may not care, but I believe there are records being made of our actions. The one who is paying attention is going to require us to give an account for these actions one day. Unfortunately, at that time it will be too late. Let us all work while it is day!                                               –Reporter Virginia Anne Koenig

Otway Christian Union Church

Pastor Bradley Harris

Greetings and Happy Valentine’s Day from Otway!

Valentine’s Day on February 14 is a custom many observe to tell their special someone that they love them. As Christians, let us use every day of the year to tell our Savior, Jesus, that we love Him.

On January 3, Robert Salsbury passed away after several years of suffering. The church was saddened by his death but rejoiced in the fact that he left a good testimony of Christ. Bob was a very faithful member of his church and served faithfully as a trustee for many years. Following Bob’s funeral on January 7, the church ladies prepared food for the family. Some came from a great distance.

On January 8, Rev. J.D. Stevens brought the evening message. We were blessed by the message and his visit.

On January 16, Danna Day was admitted to SOMC. She is still in the hospital. Continue to pray for her complete recovery.

On January 17, the sewing circle ladies met for an evening of worship, fellowship, and a devotional film.

On January 29, Paul Vastine, a student at Circleville College, came and brought a message on letting your light shine. As the world gets darker, even a small light can be seen.

As you face the winter days, remember spring will soon be here and that Jesus loves you!

Because of Calvary,

                                                 I Looked

I looked upon a farm on day,

That once I used to own;

The barn had fallen to the ground,

The fields were overgrown.

The house in which my children grew,

Where we had lived for years—

I turned to see it broken down,

And brushed aside the tears.

I looked upon my soul one day,

To find it too had grown

With thorns and nettles everywhere,

The seeds neglect had sown.

The years had passed while I had cared

For things of lesser worth:

The things of Heaven I let go

While minding things of Earth.

To Christ I turned with bitter tears,

And cried, “O Lord, forgive!

I haven’t much time left for Thee,

Not many years to live.

The wasted years forever gone,

The days I can’t recall;

If I could live those days again,

I’d make Him Lord of all.

Ballad of the Unborn:

My shining feet will never run on early morning lawn;

My feet were crushed before they had a chance to greet the dawn.

My fingers now will never stretch to touch the winning tape;

My race was done before I learned the smallest steps to take.

My growing height will never be recorded on the wall;

My growth was stopped when I was still unseen and very small.

My lips and tongue will never taste the good fruits of the earth,

For I myself was judged to be a fruit of little worth.

My eyes will never scan the sky for my high-flying kite.

For when still blind, destroyed were they in the black womb of night.

I’ll never walk the shores of life or know the tides of time.

For I was coming, but unloved, and that, my only crime.

Nameless am I, a grain of sand, one of the countless dead,

But the deed that made me ashen grey floats on seas of red.
